This article appeared in a South African magazine called Art Director over 20 years ago.

OK, so back then I was handsome and I thought those days would never end.

The photographs were taken by me in the Natal Drakensberg when I was in my mid-twenties with a 35mm Canon A1 camera. The other links are photos also taken by me, and some by friends, when I was in my 20's and 30's.

Those days are long gone and my life has changed forever. Craig Norris, the little man and the one on the left in the Aliens photograph, is one of my best friends along with Nick Guttentag and his brother Phil. They were all at University wth me and we used to hike together.

He is five foot two and he's six feet four. He fights with missles and with spears. He is all of thirty one, and he's only seventeen. He's been a soldier for a thousand years.

He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Chein, a Buddhist, a Baptist and a Jew, and he knows he shouldn't kill, and he knows he always will. Care for me, my friend, and I will care for you.

And he's fighting for Canada, he's fighting for France, he's fighting for the USA, and he's fighting for the Russians, he's fighting for Japan, and, he thinks we can put an end to war this way.

And he's fighting for democracy, he's fighting for the Reds. He says it's for the peace of all. He's the one who must decide, who's to live or who's to die and he never sees the writing on the wall.

And without him, how would Hitler kill the people at Dachau. Without him Ceasar would have stood alone. He's the one, who gives his body as a weapon of the war and without him all this killing can't go on.

He's the universal soldier, and he really is to blame. His orders came from far away no more. They come from here and there and you and me and my brothers, can't you see, this is not the way we put an end to war.
